Project description

Introduction

This Wirtschaftsförderung Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg project is one of the activities of the Skills Alliance in the Winner Region concerned with “Improving the integration of people with immigrant backgrounds”.

As elsewhere, the “immigrant” topic is becoming increasingly important for the skilled trades. With strong growth in the immigration rate, skilled trade professions want to make clear their interest in recruiting trainees with immigrant backgrounds, and communicate this interest through their actions.

Indeed, skilled trade businesses should be recognized as THE integration specialists per se, and this should be emphasised more strongly.

Moreover, implementing this project enables the skilled trades profession to honour in a very particular way the contribution that trainees with immigrant backgrounds make in showing other immigrants that they are acknowledged and accepted in the workplace.

Measures

These were the reasons that led to the “Exemplary integration in the skilled trades” project, which was developed in close cooperation between Wirtschaftsförderung SBH, the district skilled trade associations in the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region and the Constance Chamber of Commerce.

Practical Implementation

A special prize for “Exemplary Integration in the skilled trades” is given each year at the award ceremony where trainees receive their apprenticeship diploma in each of the region’s three district skilled trade associations. The prizes are awarded to apprentices who have established their career path by successfully completing their apprenticeship in a skilled trade despite major obstacles due to their immigration background.

The prize consists of a trophy and an award of €250. The winner also receives a framed certificate. The prizes are provided by Wirtschaftsförderung Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg

The prizes are presented as part of the apprenticeship award ceremony by the Chairman of the respective district skilled trades association, the President of the Constance Chamber of Commerce and Wirtschaftsförderung Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg.

The firm to which the prizewinning apprentice belongs is also invited to the ceremony and mentioned by name.

The laudatory speech is given either by an apprentice or by a member of the jury with an immigrant background.

Selecting the winners

Every business in the respective district skilled trades association can apply for the award. Companies are sent a questionnaire.  To take part in 2016, companies should return the questionnaire to the respective district skilled trades association by 5.9.2016 at the latest.

2016 Questionnaire Rottweil District Association
2016 Questionnaire Schwarzwald-Baar District Association
2016 Questionnaire Tuttlingen District Association

Selection criteria are clear and obvious obstacles in respect of the applicant’s immigrant background.  School grades should NOT be in the foreground.  The mark for the journeyman’s piece can play a role.

Jury

The jury is made up of the three Chairmen and the three Managing Directors of the district skilled trades associations, a representative of the Constance Chamber of Commerce and two Wirtschaftsförderung SBH employees. Each of these jurors has one vote.

Also in the jury are two members of regional skilled trade businesses with a Master qualification and an immigrant background.

The following persons have put themselves forward:

  • Sebahat Yilmaz-Bader

Salon Sebahat Y.-Bader Hair Design, Schramberg
