Schools, Study / further training

The local education authority (Schulamt) gives advice on schools and on what support is available, for example for children who can’t yet speak or understand German very well.

The German school system is often not easy to understand for people coming to live in Germany. The local education authority can help new arrivals cope with all the bureaucracy.

Local education authorities can give advice to parents of school-age children coming to live in Germany on the following topics:

  • What school should my child go to?
  • What are the various different school-leaving qualifications?
  • Which schools place special emphasis on assisting children who need additional help?
  • Where will my child get the support he or she needs?
  • Which schools place special emphasis on the areas in which my child is particularly strong?

Sometimes, additional help and specially trained support teachers are available (important for children who can’t yet speak or understand German).

If you’re not sure …

  • “I don’t know if the school my child is going to is the right one.“
  • or if your child is not getting enough assistance and support
… you should contact the School Inspectors at the local education authority.

Asking the local education authority for advice often means better assistance and support for your child in his or her education.
